Body Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that moves hair follicles from a part of the body called the ‘donor site’ to a bald or balding part of the body known as the ‘recipient site’. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. … Two techniques are available for hair transplant all over world—FUT & FUE. Biggest advantage of FUE is we can use body hair (beard, chest and Extremities) as donor hair for scalp.

Body Hair Transplant Surgery or “BHT” is an FUE procedure where the grafts (hair follicles) are individually removed by an ultra-fine punch tool from different parts of the patient’s body instead of the back of the scalp.  For example, from the beard, chest, back, arms or legs.it is very useful in advance grade of baldness as donor hair becomes limited in such cases. If beard and chest hair are good, they give very good result. Beard grafts are thick so give better visual impact, chest hair are used to give filling effect in between. So by using combination of scalp, beard and chest we can transplant all the bald area even in grade VII.

It is a very successful and viable procedure for restoring head hair, but there are a few things the Body Hair Transplant Surgery candidate should understand and consider carefully beforehand…for this consult your hair transplant surgeon.

Benefits of Body Hair Transplant Surgery

  1. The body acts as another donor area when the usual donor supply at the back of the head is insufficient.
  2. Most people want to remove the hair on their back, shoulders or chest, so the double benefit of Body Hair Transplant Surgery is that these unwanted hairs can be successfully utilised to thicken the density of hair on the head.
  3. The process is extremely simple and offers desired outcomes that can be achieved, if person wants to get more and more density of hair.

What is the Difference between a hair and a follicle/graft.

Scalp Hair grows in natural groupings of 1 to 5 hairs. ( one graft contains 1 to 5 hair).  In hair restoration surgery the term Follicular unit graft(FU) refer to a graft that has kept intact the natural grouping of hair as seen on the surface of the scalp.

The distribution of natural hair groupings in each follicular unit determines the person’s hair density and this has important bearing on the outcome of hair restoration.

In individuals with normal FU density may have a low hair density if single hair follicular unit is more than multiple hair follicular units. We have done study of 300 patients at Rejuvenate hair transplant center, India to see average hair per follicular unit in central part of India. The ratio coms out to be 1:2.3, it means on an average one graft yields more than two hair

There are significant racial differences in follicular unit and hair density Caucasians and Africans have more hair per follicular unit as compare to the Asians.

You can have follicular units of one, two, three, four or sometimes 5 terminal hairs, but they are all distinct anatomic entities, so keeping them intact during the harvesting process from the donor area maximises the chances of successful regrowth once they are implanted into the recipient area of the scalp.

A follicular unit will contain a single hair or multiple hairs grouped together, and also contains sebaceous (oil) glands, nerves, a small muscle, and occasional vellus hair, which are finer than the normal scalp hair.

Micro graft is the term used for one or 2 hair graft trimmed away from larger graft for use at the hairline.

One of the important aspect of hair transplant is selecting the correct number of follicular unit for a recipient area in order create the natural look and to optimize the density – for example, the hair line zone will require many single follicle units in the first few millimetres and then double hair units; whereas filling in on the central parts of the head may benefit from units with 3 or 4 hairs.

The goal is to maximise the cosmetic impact of the transplanted hair, and to ensure optimal growth. Follicular units are also referred to as ‘grafts’, so when the surgeon speaks about the number of grafts required for a transplant he’s talking about the number of follicular units he can safely take from a donor area to cover the balding regions of the scalp.( to understand 2000 grafts yields more than 4000 hair).

Cost of hair transplant will depends on number of grafts required. The number of grafts required will depend on individual patient factors such as hair density; availability of hair in the donor area and the characteristics of that hair, as well as the degree and progression of baldness.

Hair transplant surgery prices should always be based on the number of grafts transplanted, and not the number of hairs.

There are two primary methods of taking grafts from the donor area; Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), which uses a punch-like tool to excise individual follicular units of varying sizes, and Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) during which the surgeon takes a strip of scalp from the donor area at the back of the head and dissects it into individual follicular units to use for implantation.

Hair transplant Some important facts

Hair transplant Some important facts

  1. Have reasonable expectations- remember that donor hair is limited, so unlimited hair transplant is not possible.
  2. Discuss your option with your hair transplant surgeon to understand what can be achieved and what cannot be achieved.
  3. Understand that most patients need combination approaches; drugs, hair transplantation. Remember hair loss is a continuous process where as Hair transplantation is a one day event. Hair transplant corrects the baldness which has happened-it can’t prevent hair loss in future.
  4. Drugs are useful therefore to prevent future hair loss. However, none of the drugs are a cure for baldness-

  1. Do not be excessively worried about side effects by reading individual opinions- the drugs available have been in use for decades. Discuss with your doctor about these side effects. Read authoritative websites such as ishrs.org or FDA IN USA or ahrsindia.org.
  2. Do not resort to unsubstantiated treatments without seeking proof; eg. Apple stem cells, mesotherapy with injections. Remember; if hairs could be grown easily, there would be no bald men in the world.
  3. Don’t be misled by advertisements which have exaggerated content; some examples include “unlimited hairs” scar less transplant”
  4. Don’t be too confused about FUT and FUE- after all these are only methods for donor hair harvesting; REMEMBER-you are doing HT to get results in front or the bald area. What is important is to first determine which method gives you best results to cover the front area. Discuss the option with the doctor and with his assessment opt for the best method, suited to you.
  5. Take care of grafts properly after the HT. adhere to the instructions.
  6. Do not be too anxious about the growth of hairs after HT-the hairs take time for growth- doesn’t asses it by days or weeks. Be patient.
  7. Any issues or side effects, consult your doctor. Do not jump into conclusions. Remember – most hair transplant are without side effects-even if they occur they are minor.
  8. Always have a plan for future. Hair loss is not to be treated in one session or one visit. It needs planning, understanding and execution.

Scalp hair transplant by FUE using facial hair might be a great solution for the patients who have a mismatch of donor hair supply and recipient demand.  This is often seen in advanced stages of hair loss with very limited and poor quality donor hair. Men with male pattern baldness who have good quality donor hair usually have an adequate number of grafts to restore all or most of the balding areas.  However, when donor hair is fine with low density, extra grafts are required to fulfil the demand, Beard is very good option .Unlike scalp hair; beard hair is usually much thicker.  The thicker hair shaft provides more volume after the transplant which is crucial for people with recipient/donor mismatch; even grey hair can be taken by FUE

With the rise of new and more efficient methods of hair extraction through FUE more options are becoming available to us for expanding the donor hair reserve of balding patients.  Extracting hair from a beard or facial hair extraction can give us a generous source of quality hair that could be used to restore scalp hair.

Facial hair is considered unwanted in many men who shave their faces every day and removing it won’t make any difference in their faces. Many men report spending less time shaving their faces on a regular basis which is a plus for them.

Beard to scalp hair transplant is one of the newest methods of hair transplantation that has been becoming more popular thanks to the advanced techniques of FUE transplantation. ,Very small size punches are used for beard resulting in no scar. The new extraction methods through FUE procedure has helped us be able to harvest beard hair intact and transplant it to the balding areas.
Beard hair is a great source for people with advanced stages of hair loss or the ones that don’t have a good quality donor hair from their scalp.

Facial hair stays in growth phase (anagen) for long periods and goes to resting phase (telogen) for a short time in comparison to hair from other parts of the body.  This means that every transplanted facial hair is going to have a growing hair follicle most of the time.  This allows facial hair to stay in place for a longer time and grow a longer hair shaft which adds to the bulk of transplanted hair.  Thicker hair shaft of beard hair also provides more volume in the transplanted area.

What is the role of hairline for best result in Hair transplant

For good result in Hair transplant Surgery Design of Hair line is one of the most important step.Hair line is different in each and every person but there are certain similarities in hair line of same sex .for eg.

Male-With the aging process Hair line starts receding, also hair loss is there in the temporal region. Male have broad face with a slight frontoemporal recession .We can look at the hair line of some celebrities to understand this fact .We can also say that male hair line is more or less M shaped.

Female- hair line is typically placed at a lower level, it does not recede much with age .Fronto temporal angle is also full of hair .These all factors give appearance of narrow fore head. Also it is like inverted U shaped.

Properly designed hairline before hair transplant will give natural look. In male if hairline is planned at a lower level then it will give Unnatural and transplanted look.

Here are some photographs for comparison between male and female hairline.

What is hair Transplant?

What is hair Transplant?

What is hair Transplant?,FUT,FUE,Body Hair Transplant,Powered Hair transplant,DHT—There are so many terminologies when we talk of Hair transplant in India. But basic question is what hair transplant is.

It’s a type of surgery that moves hair you already have to fill an area with thin or no hair. Doctors have been doing these transplants in the U.S. since the 1950s, but techniques have changed a lot in recent years. All these recent techniques are available at rejuvenate Hair transplant in India .

You usually have the procedure in the doctor’s office. First, the surgeon cleans your scalp and injects medicine to numb the back of your head. Your doctor will choose one of two methods for the transplant: follicular unit strip surgery (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).

With FUT, the surgeon removes a 6- to 10-inch strip of skin from the back of your head. He sets it aside and sews the scalp closed. This area is immediately hidden by the hair around it.

Next, the surgeon’s team divides the strip of removed scalp into 500 to 3,000 tiny grafts, each with an individual hair or just a few hairs. The number and type of graft you get depends on your hair type, quality, colour and the size of the area where you’re getting the transplant.

If you’re getting the FUE procedure, the surgeon’s team will shave the back of your scalp. Then, the doctor will remove hair follicles one by one from there. The area heals with small dots, which your existing hair will cover.

After that point, both procedures are the same. After he prepares the grafts, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area where the hair will go, creates holes or slits with a scalpel or needle, and delicately places each graft in one of the holes. He’ll probably get help from other team members to plant the grafts, too.

Depending on the size of the transplant you’re getting, the process will take about 4 to 8 hours. You might need another procedure later on if you continue to lose hair or decide you want thicker hair.
