PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Human blood is comprised primarily of red blood cells (RBC), as well as white blood cells (WBC), platelets, and plasma. It is thought that by increasing the platelet count in a wounded area, the body’s healing to that area would be accelerated – explaining the use of PRP (platelet-rich-plasma) in wound healing. Its possible effects on promoting hair growth would make it potentially useful in both hair transplantation and the medical treatment of hair loss.
PRP Full form is Platelet Rich Plasma. It is concentrated blood plasma which contains approximately three to five times the number of platelets found in normal circulating blood. In addition, it contains platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), transforming growth factor (TGF) and other bioactive proteins that aid in wound healing and possibly hair growth.
PRP for Hair Loss Treatment
PRP therapy is a non-surgical procedure aimed to combat hair loss. The procedure stimulates the hair follicles which help to make the hair thicker and stronger.
In this PRP treatment anyone with hair loss can be benefited, it restored the structure of hair, increase hair density, and promote the growth of new hair.
PRP treatment shows excellent results by activating the dormant follicles. Growth factors present in the PRP stimulates the stem cells of the hair follicle for growth. It also enhances the blood supply and nutrition on the scalp which makes the hair shaft stronger. It prevents dandruff and blockage of sebaceous ducts.
In this procedure, the patient’s blood is taken and PRP is prepared from it. It is injected into the area where there is. The number of sessions required for the patient is advised by the hair surgeon. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy gives quick result after two to four sessions.
PRP Therapy in Hair Transplant
PRP is also used in hair transplant surgery to increase the success rate of hair transplant. It helps in improving survival of transplanted and existing hair both. In our Rejuvenate Hair Transplant Center, we do PRP as a complementary procedure before surgery. It is useful in both FUE hair transplant and FUT method.
Hair follicles survive through the absorption of oxygen from surrounding tissue. It is conjectured that the introduction of platelets and white blood cells through platelet-rich-plasma (PRP) would amplify the body’s naturally occurring wound healing mechanism. It is also proposed that PRP can actually stimulate the stem cells (dermal papilla) of the newly transplanted hair follicles.
The concentrated form of plasma has been shown to accelerate wound healing and tissue repair and, thus, could potentially benefit hair restoration procedures. In hair transplantation, PRP can be injected into or sprayed on the recipient site area to, theoretically, stimulate the healing of the transplanted grafts and into the donor area to facilitate healing of the donor incision and potentially minimize scar formation.
PRP Treatment for hair is useful in many conditions such as
- Almost all forms of alopecia for eg- androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, etc.
- In stress-related hair fall.
- Thinning hair due to certain diseases and illness
- Postpartum thinning
- Fragility and dryness of hair can be improved
- Prevent from dandruff
PRP Success Rate
Platelet-rich plasma is a modern way to prevent hair loss. In this treatment, the complete hair loss will not stop suddenly. It takes a few months to get results. PRP helps to promote hair growth and thus increase the volume of hair.
Those patients who are suffering the severe level of baldness, they may not get a positive result because of the plasma work in the hair follicle which is present in the scalp but not on the dead hair.

PRP Hair Treatment Side Effects
There are no side effects of PRP therapy. We use autologous plasma so there is no remote possibility of allergic reactions. The procedure is done with all aseptic precautions so the chances of infection are also not there.
Preparation of PRP ( Platelet Rich Plasma )
First, Around 20 to 100 ml of blood is taken from the vein and placed in a special tube. This is a painless procedure and no risk is associated with it.
Second, The patient’s blood is stored in a special apparatus. In the centrifuge, the blood is separated into three fractions:
Plasma with a small amount of platelets;
Platelet-rich plasma;
Red blood cells.
Platelet-rich plasma is used for injections. It contains 4-6 times of normal platelet present in the blood. The centrifuging process is done automatically and takes no more than twenty minutes.
Third, the PRP is injected in the area where there is less hair. There is no use of anesthesia for this PRP treatment. And in this, the possibility of infection or allergy is almost nil because the plasma is taken from the patient’s blood.
Is PRP effective for hair loss
Yes, It is a very effective treatment because the platelets present in PRP releases various growth factors, these platelets derived growth factors (PDGF) acts at the stem cell level and stimulates hair growth. Also, the Plasma of PRP contains proteins, minerals, amino acids, fats, glucose, etc.which provides nutrition.

PRP Therapy Results
In the medical treatment of male and female pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia), PRP can be injected into the balding scalp to potentially stimulate thin (miniaturized) hair to grow into thicker (terminal) hairs. Patients with thin, but not totally bald areas, would be the best candidates.
