What factors are responsible for hair fall in women and how it can be controlled?


After age 40-45 years losing near about 100 hairs a day is normal and these hair will get replaced naturally. But, if you are losing more than that, there could be abnormal hair loss. It is called androgenetic alopecia that affects 20 million women in the India, though the number might actually be close to 30 million. Androgenetic alopecia causes women to lose their hair in a diffuse manner, meaning that hair begins to thin and shed uniformly across the scalp.

What factors are responsible for hair fall in women and how it can be controlled?


  • Telogen effluvium is the most common cause of a diffuse loss of hair with thinning.
  • Nutritional factors plays major role in hair loss .Ferritin deficiency is one of the main cause of hair fall in Indian women.
  • Female pattern baldness: similar to male pattern baldness, there is more loss of hair at the top of scalp
  • If the DHT is increased in female body that will cause androgenetic alopecia. For women, androgenetic alopecia may be undetectable for quite some time.
  • Traction alopecia: It is a condition in which constant force is applied on hair. Eg. hair loss along the hairline due to prolonged wearing of tight ponytails.
  • Alopecia areata: There are several patches of hair loss in scalp.
  • Cicatricial alopecia : hair loss occurring after any injury, like burns, cuts and bruises or scars from physical or chemical traumas, any scar or incision site after a cosmetic or corrective surgery.
  • Use of certain medicines like anticancer drugs.
  • Stress: Stress play major role for hair fall. When our stress level is increased our body release negative hormones and they affect our body and also hairs.


In women, however, hair loss can be triggered by many factors, following diagnostic tests should be performed when attempting to pinpoint the hair loss trigger. There are some diagnostic tests for hair loss :- Hormone levels (DHEAs, testosterone, androstenedione, prolactin, follicular stimulating hormone, and leutinizing hormone) Serum iron, Serum Ferritin, Total iron binding capacity (TIBC), Thyroid stimulating hormone (T3, T4, TSH), VDRL (a screening test for syphilis), Complete blood count (CBC).

Scalp biopsy

A small section of scalp usually 4mm in diameter is removed and examined under a microscope to help determine the cause of hair loss.

Hair pull

The hair pull test is a simple diagnostic test in which the physician lightly pulls a small amount of hair (approx 100 simultaneously) in order to determine if there is excessive loss. Normal range is one to three hairs per pull Densitometry or tricoscan the densitometer is a handheld magnification device which is used check for miniaturization of the hair shaft.


Specialized Treatment for Women:

First of all use medical treatment for hair loss like, Multivitamin, calcium, Omega 3 fatty acid, Iron, Amino acid and topical Solution/foam Minoxidil 2-5%.The Solution/foam must be applied1ml.Directly on scalp twice daily. This treatment controls hair fall and increase thickness of hairs. Also it helps growth of villous hairs. Treating Androgenetic Alopecia with Laser Therapy Low level laser therapy has been proven effective in clinical studies.
